Fitting the Human : Introduction to Ergonomics
All humans have remarkably similar bodies: the head, two arms, and two legs attached to the trunk. Everybody uses the same set of bones and muscles that move the body. Respiration, circulation, nervous control, and other basic functions are uniform. Yet, the bodies of people who live in unique climates, consume special diets, or perform distinct activities over long periods of time evolve to adapt to the particular conditions. Thus, within the general similarity of humankind, there are differences in the bodies among groups of people. Furthemore, individuals differ each other in size and capabilities.rnrnWe need to recognize and measure existing differences among people so that we can devise clothing and equipment, taskas, and procedures to fit their special needs.
