Phamit Story : The Experience of an HIV Prevention Project for Migrant Workers in Thailand
Thailand has experienced economic and social demographic change over the past decade that has stregthened the economy and increased opportunities for many Thais. This has resulted in Thai laborers shunning undesirable, low-paying jobs, or elsehas encouraged them to go abroad to do the same work for higher pay. Coupled with employers seeking lower wage cost, there is a demand for unskills labor ini Thailand. Migrant workers fill this gap and are now prominent in jobs characterized as the three Ds-dirty, dangerous and difficult. In this way, migrants have become indispensible to Thailands economy.rnrnIt is estimated that migrant labor constituties approximately 5% of Thailands work force. Assuming that migrant laborers productiviy is equal to that of Thai laborers - it is estimated that, in 2005, migrants may have contributed up to as much as 6,2% to Thailands GDP or the equivalent of $USD 11 Billion.
