Empowered Lives Safer Livelihoods
Oxfam Great Britain in Pakistan has been striving to address the fundamental causes of poverty
and inequality since 1973. To remain demand driven while addressing the needs and challenges
regarding food and livelihoods, Oxfam's approach has evolved
with
changing contexts. Currently,
Oxfam is convening for solutions around 'Right to Food' through its Food Security program at
both
micro and macro levels. This has been Oxfam's key area of intervention with rationale that despite
being an agricultural country, one third of Pakistan's population does not have regular and assured
access to food, whereas the country produces bumper crops enough to feed its whole population.
Oxfam has learned from its programming that food distribution is one of the major impediments in
ensuring Right to Food. Among the food insecure population are the poor farmer communities who
grow food for others. Marginalized communities specifically smallholder women and men farmers
suffer from mild to acute malnourishment. Furthennore, the nexus of low quality inputs, low produc
tion, stumpy prices, controlled markets and unfair distribution traps the poor farmers and compro
mises their overall economic well being. Therefore, from advocating for farmer focused agriculture
policies to improving agriculture practices at grass roots level, Oxfam's programmes are afoot to
bring a positive change.
