The Fifth Layer of Jakarta
"The Fifth Layer shows how Jakarta can be understood as a city of multiple layers of time; how
to appreciate the complexities of each layer; and what it means when different layers interact,
shape and displace each other. Jo Santoso traces the twists and the turns of the layers, and
peels them, one by one, to see whether Jakarta is a sweet heart or a rotten core. Along the way,
he picks up a variety of things, from ruins to hidden treasures to construct his analysis and
manifesto in order to bring to light the challenge of the present. His delving into the city's multiĀ
layered body of knowledge will challenge a broad spectrum of readers, specially architects and
planners, to think more critically, and more politically, about history, space and power."
